Trusting God’s Sovereignty Changes Everything

Luke 8:24–25 (ESV)

24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

The Bible is clear that God is sovereignly ruling over everything in creation, every second of the day.  He places the stars in the sky and knows them by name, (Isaiah 40:26).  He commands the weather, (Job 5:10).  He changes the times and seasons and raises up and removes the kings and nations, (Daniel 2:21).   He owns the whole earth and everything in it, (Psalm 24:1).

Everyday humans have a choice to believe in God’s sovereign power by placing their trust/faith in His Word from the Bible.  If we trust that God is all powerful (Psalm 147:5), absolute in control (Ephesians 1:11), is attentive to our lives and needs (Psalm 37:23), has designed a plan for us (Psalm 139:16), and that absolutely nothing can stop His plan (Job 42:2)… We have just crossed over from victims to victorious if we have a relationship with Him.  What can come against me when He is for me? (Romans 8:31)  I am now more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37) because I am fully aware of the power and character of God that is working for my good, (Romans 8:28).  Nothing is impossible with God, (Luke 1:37).

You can’t have this comfort and security without a relationship with God.  You need a relationship with God!  Jesus Christ is the way (John 14:6), the only name under heaven by which men shall be saved, (Acts 4:12).  Why?  Because Jesus is God who died on the cross to pay the penalty for your sins, the sins that prevent you from having a relationship with God!  Sin separates us from God.  Jesus’ death and resurrection separate us from sin, because those sins were all bore on His back and paid completely.  It is finished! (John 19:30)  If you want the confidence of knowing you have the living God as your Advocate, you must submit to His sovereign plan of salvation through Jesus Christ.  Romans 10:13  For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Too often we rely on our own strength because we lack the faith to trust in God’s sovereignty and His plan of salvation in Jesus.  Many deceptive philosophies attempt to use the presence of evil and suffering in the world to convince us that God is not good or trustworthy, and of course the primary arguments stems from denying His sovereignty.  They ignore His love and mercy to die for sinful men. Once we attempt life on our own we have taken the bait and our despair is inevitable.  No one has the strength or ability to contend with all the pressures and challenges of this world.  Certainly, even the must successful (in the world’s eyes) cannot cope with the disastrous effects of a cursed world.  This trap is so cunning.  Yet common sense would steer us back toward a God-dependent life style if we would just admit that we don’t have the strength to change the sin in our own heart, to overcome death, or to change the outcome of our eternal destiny on our own.  We don’t know what is going to happen 5 minutes from now!  Wouldn’t you like to be in the protective and caring hands of the One who does?
